I've laid down the mundane geographical features for the homebrew Dwarf-Land map. I still have to add settlements, castles, major lairs and dungeons, "weird" features, and general fancying up. I also have to do lettering once I've decided what's what and where.
I went with "cloud"-style forests so they can be easily picked out and differentiated from hills and swamp, and colored in the lakes with a Micron brush pen so they stand out from the forests.
(Side note for your reference: I inked the map, a standard JG blank numbered hex map, with a variety of pen sizes including some heavy brushing, and not a drop bled through to the other side. I've never actually used both sides for permanent maps, but it seems to me one could easily do so. People ask me all the time about the blank maps, so there's the link.)
Below are a couple of images. The first is the current state of the map, the second is a zoom on a haunted lake I've marked with a little ghost. Because it's haunted.

Caspar Friendly Friedrich Lake.
ReplyDeleteComing along nicely. Just a thought. Ive noticed that the wilderlands guys emphasise coastlines and their wider river banks with tiny tufts of grass and such.
You're inspiring me to make a NK purchase. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteI love the ghost. I think you should do the sea(?) at the bottom in the same black so you can make water all look the same.
ReplyDeleteThe ghost rocks!
ReplyDeleteIt's also looking a bit like the great state of Minnesota with all those lakes... :)
I like the thought of MN, in an alternate universe, being Dwarf Land...
I think the flag of Blackmoor has already been planted in the Land of Lakes, and I'm not so presumptuous as to challenge that claim. :)
ReplyDeleteThe pleasures of a hand-drawn hex map. I love the look.

ReplyDeleteI'm undecided about this. I like the freedom to place islands as needed, I'm planning to place some underwater lairs and at least one city, and (probably most importantly) I don't want to hog people's toner if they photocopy it. :)
Not only haunted, but angrily haunted. You can really tell from the eyes.
